Project notebooks. Create a notebook for each project you undertake. Complex or collaborative projects may call for multiple notebooks. Here are the kinds of project notebooks I rely on:
Basic. Use for meeting and phone call notes, draft proposals, and other rough draft documents. It’s for your eyes only, so it’s OK if it includes crazy ideas or random notes to yourself.
Team notebook. If your colleagues use Evernote, set up a shared notebook so that you can centralize your notes and resources in one place. (You’ll still want a separate, private notebook for stuff that is too messy to share yet.) Use it for web clippings of articles to share with the team, PDFs of background articles, and meeting notes. (See the section on sharing for more on collaboration in Evernote.)
Client notebook. Evernote can be a great way to share your work and resources with a project’s client. Use it for sharing (edited) notes on your meetings, polished drafts of documents, and background materials. Even if your client isn’t already an Evernote user, consider offering him this option. He may appreciate the chance to try a new way of working and to feel more involved in the process.
Background materials. If you’re working on a project that involves a lot of research, it may be easier to keep background materials separate from your own notes and meeting minutes. Use this notebook to round up web clippings, PDFs of documents, images that are relevant to your project, and any other information you’ve gathered in the course of your work.
